Massive Explosion Rocks Boston, Eastern Massachusetts

(MENAFN) A thunderous explosion shook eastern Massachusetts on Saturday, sending alarmed residents flooding phone lines from Boston to surrounding communities, with early indications pointing to a possible meteor or bolide entering the atmosphere.

NBC10 meteorologist Pamela Gardner was among the first to offer an explanation, posting on X that the blast was likely a bolide or meteor. "There's a satellite lighting detection around Boston — but no lightning! No earthquakes on USGS either," Gardner wrote, effectively ruling out both a lightning strike and seismic activity as causes.

The boom reverberated across a wide swath of the state, rattling residents in Scituate, Winchester, Arlington, Cambridge, Concord, Lynnfield, Boston, and beyond. Emergency services were inundated with calls.

Watertown police confirmed the widespread reach of the blast, stating: "It was heard over the eastern part of the state. Unknown origin no reports of hazards at this time."

Authorities in Coventry, Rhode Island — suggesting the shockwave extended beyond Massachusetts state lines — posted: "The Boom: No reports of any damage or local incident as of yet. Earth Quake maybe."

Cambridge police acknowledged the public alarm but offered little clarity, noting "we are unaware of any specific issues or incidents originating in Cambridge."

In Newbury, the fire department described a flood of calls from residents reporting "a significant geological-type activity," characterizing the experience as "a 'sonic-wave' or 'explosion' like sensation. We felt it here at the PD too and are unaware of any public safety concerns in Newbury or the surrounding communities at this time."

Needham police cautioned the public that "we have no information at this time and phone lines are being tied up with actual calls for service."

No damage, injuries, or safety hazards had been reported across any of the affected communities as of Saturday.
