City receives $50,000 grant for Massachusetts Street bus stop improvements
The City of Lawrence has received a $50,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas through its Pathways to a Healthy Kansas program to support construction of bus stop improvements as part of the City’s Massachusetts Street Multimodal Improvements project.
The funding will help advance improvements along the project corridor designed to better support people using public transit in conjunction with the City project that supports a safer corridor for people using all modes of transportation including transportation alternatives.
Pathways to a Healthy Kansas is the largest community grant initiative ever funded by BCBSKS. It combines community-wide, evidence-based solutions and practices to help Kansas communities improve active living, healthy eating, behavioral health and commercial tobacco prevention. The Massachusetts Street Multimodal Project is being partially funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas as part of LiveWell Douglas County’s Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant.
Community input has been an important part of planning for the project. In fall 2025, City of Lawrence and Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization staff engaged with local STEAM classrooms to allow students to envision corridor improvement opportunities. The Pathways grant application was written in part based on student input.
That engagement provided students an opportunity to learn about and help inform real-world transportation improvements in their community while providing the project team with another perspective on how people move through and experience the Massachusetts Street area.
